Lookin’ Good for Jesus ???
Every now-and-then, a news story reads like something from the funny papers, making you wonder if it’s not been dummied up just to see how people react. Such is the case with the article I read earlier today. Reuters carried it under the headline of Jesus cosmetics prove too cheeky for Singapore.
I guess it wasn’t the news report that seemed so incredible. Rather, it was the story behind the story. I was surprised to learn that a person could actually purchase cosmetics under brand of Lookin’ Good for Jesus. A site that markets these products has a dreamy-eyed, blond-haired beauty resting on Jesus’ shoulder and looking longingly at Him. The caption under this image is: Get Tight With Christ. On this same page there is a catchy bit of copy that states: Look your Sunday best! Guaranteed to help you be worthy and get noticed by the King of Kings.
I imagine the intent is to have a little fun. But, like so many other things of this nature, it is just so easy to get carried away and step beyond the bounds of propriety. When I showed this web site to my sixteen-year-old daughter she said, “That’s awful!” I wonder what the Lord would think. I’m reasonably certain He would not approve, especially against the backdrop of 1 Peter 3, a portion of which Eugene Peterson translates as follows:
What matters is not your outer appearance—the styling of your hair, the jewelry you wear, the cut of your clothes—but your inner disposition. Cultivate inner beauty, the gentle, gracious kind that God delights in. The holy women of old were beautiful before God that way…
Well, that’s enough of my ramblings on this topic. What do you sisters think?
(UPDATE: Please forgive the unintentional exclusion of the brothers. What lies at the source of this grievous sin? I simply do not know. I must have assumed I’d hear from some of you. Oh well, I do appreciate the fact that a few of you have ventured forth and made comments.)
Blessings in Christ,
-bill

Not funny. I think there is a fine line to humor about Christianity (that websites like the Holy Observer and this silly make-up seem to me to cross). I am not one who thinks that there should always be a serious, straight face, but that’s too much for me.

February 14th, 2008 at 6:55 amSince I’m not a “sister” I guess I best not comment!
February 14th, 2008 at 4:09 pmI’ll get in touch with my “feminine side” and leave a comment. Sounds like someone trying to play on the need for makeup and mixed a little Christianity with it to make a profit.
February 15th, 2008 at 7:49 amThis reminds me of the story Chuck Swindoll wrote in one of his books about a girl wanting to buy a silver cross necklace … but asked the salesperson if they had any “with a little man on it.” Jesus has become just another marketing tool, and unfortunately, I think this is true of some of the “Christian” authors / merchandisers out there.
February 15th, 2008 at 12:32 pmIn the long run, it probably doesn’t matter much - like a lot of things people do.
[You may be right, Paul. Still, I think of the oft repeated maxim: the only thing needed for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. Blessings in Christ, -bill]
