Three questions about auto auctions

Have you ever watched an auto auction on television? Perhaps you’ve attended one in person. They are interesting, aren’t they? Earlier, I spent a couple of hours watching the Mecum Muscle Car Auction on HD Theater.

1965-shelby-daytona-cobra-coupeOne image—that of the 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe—sticks in my mind. I believe I heard the announcer say negotiations were nearing completion for a collector to purchase this automobile for a price in excess of $1 million. Incredible, isn’t it?

dodge-challengerWatching this program causes me to be quite nostalgic. It makes me wish I’d never traded my Dodge Challenger for a Monte Carlo. I paid less than $2000 for my Challenger back in 1977. A similar model sold for $26,750 at the recent Mecum auction in Indianapolis.

I can’t watch the Chevelle Super Sports; Mach 1 Mustangs; Oldsmobile 442’s and Pontiac GTO’s cross the auction block without thinking of my buddies from way back when.

Watching these auctions prompts more than nostalgia, though. Many questions cross my mind as I watch the cars roll by, the crowds mingle about and the buyers nervously up their bids.

  1. How is it possible for these people in such difficult economic times to have this kind of money?
  2. What are these people going to do with these cars now that they’ve acquired them?
  3. Why do we idolize automobiles the way we do?

Just wondering,

Bill

    1. Those people will always have that kind of money; good or bad economics times, they just have more of it during good economic times.

    2. Store them, drive them, sell them later for a profit.

    3. I don’t think we idolize autos like we did during the era of the ‘muscle car’. However, some people still use their cars as status symbols. To others, it’s just a means of getting from one place to another. A car can mean freedom. Muscle cars mean freedom with a V8 thrill.

    Bill,

    I don’t know the answer to #1, but I wish i did!

#2 – they are going to freak out everytime someone breathes on it!

#3 Because it reminds us of a simpler time. It seems there is something about us humans that always want to go back… I believe it is a shadow of a desire to return to the Garden where everything was in harmony with the creator.
